Samson Reyes-Findley

A pickaxe An axe

Samson Reyes-Findley was a miner for most of his life before being hired by Jay Foster to work as a groundskeeper and butcher for Achille Meursault. Despite learning the true nature of what his job entailed relatively early on in his tenure at the manor, he made little effort to do anything about it, seeing it as something that wasn't his business. Despite this, he was highly suspicious of both Jay and Achille, leading to the fatal events of the winter and his death at age 37.

Samson was a tan, stocky man standing at about 5'6. He often seemed slightly shorter due to slouching heavily. He had severe and improperly healed burns leaving massive scarring on his forearms, back, and the left side of his body generally. His left eye and ear were also severely damaged by the explosion. Samson kept his head shaved following his scarring to avoid his hair growing in patchily. His undamaged eye is a dark brown, and the remaining stubble on his head is a rich black. His wedding and pinky finger have been amputated.
He typically wore clothes appropriate for a manual laborer of his time, including suspenders and a heavy work boots. Even after being hired by Jay, he preferred to have clothing of a utilitarian style despite being able to afford better quality clothing at that point.

Samson was born in Aberdeen, Scotland and raised almost entirely by his mother alone. While his father would occasionally send money home, he was rarely involved in Samson’s life, constantly at work in Cornwall’s mines. While his life with his mother was full of financial struggle, she always acted with his best interest in mind. Following her death when Samson was 13, Samson followed in his father’s footsteps to work in the copper mines. He would additionally work in tin and coal mines during this time. Following this, his father would abandon his job and his son, apparently from the grief of losing Serapia.
Forced to fend for himself, he took on as much extra work as he could during his time in the mining industry. His unwillingness to partake in trips to bars and frequent efforts to attain more responsibilities (and therefore higher pay) left him unpopular with the men in the mining company.
By the time he would reach adulthood, Samson would have enough experience and credit within the company that he would gain a level of power, mining less and giving directions more. After years of abuse and petty theft by the other members of the company, Samson would intentionally fail to warn the other miners of an incoming collapse following the triggering of an explosive. This would lead to the accident which killed the other miners, and in turn left Samson permanently scarred as the explosion and fires grew beyond the intended size. This explosion would result in losing much of the hearing in his left ear and being blinded in his left eye, only able to register bright colors and major changes in lighting. He would also lose his wedding and pinky finger on his left hand.
Upon receiving a compelling job offer from James Foster after the explosion he intentionally caused, there was little reason (or time) to stick around Cornwall, quickly traveling to Glasgow.

Samson can speak and read English and Scots, and Scottish English fluently. Additionally, he can understand written and spoken Mexican Spanish from his childhood with his mother, but struggles to form sentences quickly while speaking or writing. He can also understand basic commands in Cornish from his time working in Cornwall.
He has claustrophobia, mild pyrophobia, and nyctophobia.
His hobbies include birdwatching and playing the harmonica as it is an instrument that can be played one handed. He used to be a fiddle player before losing two of his fingers.
